Preproduction of a narrative film (on the example of the film Pamfir)

Workshop’s overview

A series of 6 workshops with the director and screenwriter Dmytro Sukholytkyy-Sobchuk, where he will talk in detail about the preproduction period. You will learn how to work with storyboards for a film, with a concept artist, about the importance of a storyboard, read-throughs of a script, working with actors, and why long rehearsals are important, “casting” and “test shots” with the cameraman before the start of the shooting, thorough preparation with the production designer.

All the features of preproduction, directing techniques and secrets that will help you better prepare before the start of filming. After all, the key to a successful film is thorough preparation.

Duration and location

The series of workshops includes classes for 3 hours 2 times a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from September 5, 2023.

From 6:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m.

Zhovten Cinema, conference hall.

Cost

Applications are accepted through the application form on the website.

The cost of a series of 6 workshops is UAH 6,000.

Program

• Director’s prepration (moodboard and director’s treatment). The director’s script before shooting: what should be considered, how to work with it with the team before the start?
• Actors. Read-throughs with actors. Are long rehearsals before shooting justified and how will they affect the film? Various types of rehearsals (speech, practice of scenes, mise-en-scènes, improvisation)
  Casting, rehearsals and practical advice in working with actors.
• Concept art: development, details, and what it is for the director. How it works and why it’sneeded. Work with a concept artist, creative collaboration before the shooting.
  Storyboard. Why it’s needed and what are the tasks of a storyboarder.
• Preparatory work with the cinematographer: what nuances should be taken into account. Work with colors and framing.
• The designer and the director. Working out the main artistic solutions (spatial, color, and compositional features).
• Directing tasks for the art department to prepare for shooting as best as possible. (creation of layouts, sketches, and visualization of artistic solutions).

All workshops will be accompanied by examples from the preparation period of the films «Pamfir», «Wheightlifter» and «Boroda».
